Fall 2022 Substitute Teacher Workshops

The workbook is included in your workshop!

This fun program prepares people interested in serving as substitute teachers or ed techs. There will be plenty of “hands-on learning” that will include important classroom management techniques and teaching strategies. We’ll also cover some legal aspects and help you develop your own “sub pack” of resources and an action plan to get you started on the right foot! If you’ve been subbing, this is a great opportunity for a “refresher” and new ideas. Attendees will earn a certificate recognized by many local districts. One attendee comments, “…very engaging with a lot of real-life scenarios. I came away with new information even after subbing for a year.”

This fall, three Adult Education Programs are offering the workshop.

  • Spruce Mountain Adult Ed in Livermore Falls is offering the one-day workshop on September 13, 2022.
  • MSAD 53 Adult Ed in Pittsfield offers part one on Tuesday night, September 20, 2022. Part two is scheduled for Thursday night, September 22, 2023. To be eligible for a certificate of completion, you must attend both nights.*
  • RSU 19 Adult Ed in Newport offers part one on Monday night, October 17, 2022. Part two is scheduled for Wednesday night, October 20, 2022. To be eligible for a certificate of completion, you must attend both nights*.

*Note that a third evening is included offering the required Suicide Awareness and Prevention Training.

Substitute Teacher Workshops Scheduled

After a year of uncertainty, three adult education programs have scheduled live and in-person workshops this fall.

And that’s not a surprise! This fun program is designed to prepare people interested in serving as a substitute teacher or ed-tech.  There will be plenty of “hands-on learning” including important classroom management techniques and teaching strategies. We’ll also cover some legal aspects and help you develop your own “sub pack” of resources and an action plan that will get you started on the right foot! If you’ve been subbing, this is a great opportunity for a “refresher” and some new ideas. One student comments, “…very engaging with a lot of real-life scenarios. I came away with new information even after subbing for a year.”

Spruce Mountain Adult Education (Livermore Falls) is offering the program as a one-day workshop on September 15, 2021, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm.

RSU 19 Adult Education (Newport) is offering the program as two evening classes on September 20, 2021, and September 22, 2021, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. (Students must attend both evenings.)

MSAD 53 Adult Education (Pittsfield) is offering the program as two evening classes on September 28, 2021, and September 30, 2021, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. (Students must attend both evenings.)

Note that information and registration may not yet be available on the adult ed websites–summer is not quite over yet! Mark your calendars and check back! You may also contact me with questions…

Course Updates

In a world that seems crazy, I have a few more certainties to share with you!

For real estate sales agents, I’ve added an associate broker course to the schedule! It’ll be in Augusta, in November. You can or visit The Real Estate Learning Group Website.

For Suicide Awareness and Prevention, I continue to search for physical sites and programs interested in offering this two-hour program for free. The need is not diminishing. A study by the Mental Health Index published this month shows the risk for depression among U.S. workers has risen an alarming 102% since February of this year. I am also working on live-streaming this course as an alternative. Stay tuned! (If your organization would like to host a live workshop, please let me know!

For Substitute Teacher Training, several adult education programs are interested in hosting a course but the specifics are coming together slowly. There is, however, one exception! I am very pleased to announce that Spruce Mountain Adult Education-RSU 73, is making this a priority and has scheduled an in-person workshop on September 16, 2020, preceded by a no-cost online forum, facilitated by “Mr. Boomsma.”

Social distancing requirements mean reduced capacity in classrooms and all live courses and workshops are filling up quickly. Act quickly!

To teach how to live without certainty and yet without being paralyzed by hesitation is perhaps the chief thing that philosophy, in our age, can do for those who study it.

Important Course Announcements!

The Substitute Teacher’s Forum scheduled for today, February 27, 2020, at Nokomis Regional High has been postponed due to school closings. It is rescheduled for Monday, March 2, 2020. Contact RSU 19 Adult Education for additional information.

The Suicide Awareness and Prevention Workshop scheduled for March 31, 2020, in Dover Foxcroft has a location change. Due to the larage number of participants registering, the course will be held at the SeDoMoCha School Library on Harrison Avenue. This means there’s still time to register and room for more–this is a free workshop.

For those also attending the Suicide Awareness Workshop as part of the Substitute Teacher Workshop, note the location for that has NOT changed–the Substitute Teacher Workshop will be held at PVAEC.

For information about both Dover Foxcroft Workshops, contact PVAEC at 564-6525 or visit their website.

If any of this is confusing you can always contact Walter! Hope to see you in a course or workshop soon!

Substitute Teacher Hiring Process Update

First, note that every district has its own hiring process, minimum qualifications, pay rates, etc. for substitute teachers. The superintendent’s office for the district you are employed by or applying to will always be your best starting place for questions and information, application packets, etc.

The fingerprinting and background check process is, however, fairly standard. There has been a minor change in the way the Maine D.O.E.(Department of Education) handles this. For those who are familiar with the process, the change is actually quite simple. You will no longer be mailed a copy of the “CHRC Approval” certificate. (In the past, I suggested that a copy of this be presented to your district office.)

In checking with several districts, it appears most districts are no longer requiring a copy since the status can be easily verified online, by them and you. (You can also check your own status at any time.) This is done using what is commonly referred to as the NEO system or site.

If you are subbing in more than one district, each will have access once you have applied and given them your social security number. In many respects, the process is easier!

A special note for all subs: While the reasons are complicated and not exactly logical, you are required to go through the fingerprinting and background check process every five years and pay the associated fees. As a substitute, you cannot “renew” your certification. The D.O.E. does not send notices or reminders–some districts do, but ultimately it is your responsibility to keep your credentials current. Five years is a long time and it’s easy to forget this! I’d suggest you make it a habit to check your expiration date at the beginning or end of every school year. (The link is given above.)

More good news: There is now a fairly simple and straightforward description of the finger-printing process on the Maine D.O.E. website, including access to the required application.

Even more good news: I will be updating this information and including it in future Substitute Teacher Workshops… there are currently three scheduled for early spring. Details will be posted here and on Mr. Boomsma’s Facebook Page later this week.
